Abdullah Abdullah, Hamid Karzai's main challenger, has called for a run-off in Afghanistan's presidential election. Amid the controversy, Afghanistan is yet to elect a new president and there is still no clear indication about whether there will be a run-off. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports from Kabul.

Rethink Afghanistan- Election Fraud
goo.gl Sign the Petition saying that we don't want another dime of US money spent on Afghan military forces until the Kabul government addresses rampant election fraud. If the Kabul government can't be trusted to run a legitimate election, they certainly can't be trusted with US-bought weapons and a massive US taxpayer-funded military force.

But a major US newspaper is reporting allegations of massive voter fraud to help Afghan president Hamid Karzai win re-election. The report comes as Afghanistan's Independent Electoral Complaints Commission says votes from nearly 500 polling stations across the country have been invalidated due to allegations of widespread fraud. VOA's Chris Simkins has more on the story.

Adventures in Mapping Afghanistan Elections - 27C3
Adventures in Mapping Afghanistan Elections The story of 3 Ushahidi mapping and reporting projects. Monitoring and reporting about elections in a war zone is a complex and dangerous task. While crisis mapping carried out via sms and email proved highly successful with the use of Ushahidi in situations like post-election violence in Kenya, tracking crime in Atlanta, or earthquake recovery in Haiti, could it prove useful in such a complex situation as the Afghan political process? This year a team of people set out to do just that with three different Ushahidi mapping projects for national media, national election observers, and international observers. The following presentation is about the challenges we faced, successes we did or did not have, and the lessons learned for the future of crisis mapping. In 2008 an open source mapping system called Ushahidi was put into public use for the first time in history. The occasion was a constitutional referendum in Kenya and the goal of the Ushahidi system was to map and track reports of violence throughout the country in the days following the vote. Through the use of sms reports from the general public, which were then categorized and published on an interactive map accessible on the internet, anyone anywhere in the world could not only get reports about what was happening, they could get almost real time reports about where violence was happening, when, and details regarding those incidents. The response in Kenya was so large ...

Insecurity impedes Afghan election campaign
The deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan has made some regions inaccessible for candidates campaigning ahead of the country's parliamentary elections, due to take place on September 18. Many candidates have been forced to travel with bodyguards and armoured vehicles, but despite taking these precautions some areas remain too dangerous to campaign in. Although more than 130000 coalition forces are reinforcing the Afghan government, the spread of instability has left a large segment of the population at risk of being either not represented at all in the poll or having their ballot subjected to fraud. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher reports from Kabul, the Afghan capital.

Afghan election excitement overshadows Taliban threat
As election day in Afghanistan approaches, tens of thousands of American and British troops there are doing all they can to guarantee the security of millions of Afghan voters. But the Taliban is doing all it can to let these voters know that they are not safe. On Tuesday, with the election two days away and the campaign winding down, the Taliban launched a series of attacks on the capital city of Kabul. A suicide car bomber attacked a NATO convoy on the outskirts of the city, killing at least seven people and wounding another 50. Two mortar rounds also landed near the presidential palace. US President Barack Obama insists winning the war in Afghanistan is vital to Americas security interests, and a free and fair election no doubt would help that cause. But security concerns remain front and center. Kimberly Marten, a professor of political science at Columbia Universitys Barnard College, joins Martin Savidge to discuss the impending vote, US strategy ahead of the election and the role of warlords. worldfocus.org

Afghan elections highlight failure, not progress
In most elections, the question is about who might win. In the case of Afghanistan, which will elect the lower house of its parliament on September 18, the focus is on whether they can be held in a credible manner across the country. So far a number of election workers and a candidate have already been kidnapped. Journalist Kelley Vlahos said the US has used the elections, both in Iraq and Afghanistan as symbols of freedom and progress; however it is unlikely this election will highlight progress. She said these elections will more likely show the failures of international efforts in Afghanistan and illustrate the corruption in the Afghan government.
